Holodomor Torch
The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) began the International Holodomor Flame procession in Canberra in 6 April 2008. The torch will travel around 33 countries, visiting every Ukrainian community, before finishing in Kyiv, Ukraine in November. The International Holodomor Torch is a joint project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ukrainian World Congress' International Coordinating Committee of the 75th commemoration of the Holodomor. At the torch lighting in Canberra were members of the International and National Executives of the UYA, and members of Canberra-Queanbeyan and Sydney branches of the UYA. Mr. Stefan Romaniw OAM, the President of the International Coordinating Committee and the AFUO (and also the 1st vice-president of the International UYA Executive) first handed the torch to survivors of the Holodomor, who then passed it over to Senator Gary Humphries. At the conclusion of the procession, Canberra-Queanbeyan UYA members passed the torch to Sydney UYA members, with Sydney being the torch's next destination.

Holodomor Commemoration
CANBERRA: Ukraine Remembers - The World Acknowledges! On 8 March, 2008, Ukrainian from around Australia gathered in Canberra to take part in a rally, and remember all those who tragically lost their lives during the Holodomor in Ukraine. The Holodomor (based on two Ukrainian words: holod - 'hunger, starvation, famine', and moryty - 'to induce suffering, to kill') was an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people, committed by the Soviet Communist regime in 1932-33.
