the Minneapolis & St. Paul branch

Mission and Youth Activities:

CYM or the UAYA is part of a worldwide organization with chapters in cities across the globe connecting Ukrainian youths with one another and with the broader global community (for an explanation of the various acronyms for our organization, please see below) .

The mission of the UAYA is to educate our youth about our Ukrainian cultural heritage and to build unity between Ukrainians around the world. We also see it as part of our mission to promote all things Ukrainian to the broader community in our own area and beyond.

CYM members meet weekly to participate in programs which include discussion groups, sports, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, and field trips.  Lectures and special activities enable our youth to broaden their knowledge in areas such as Ukrainian history, geography & cultural traditions, and various of our programs and activities function to share our cultural heritage with a broader public.

UAYA, CYM, SUM or SUMA. . .?

Each of the above is a different acronym used to refer to our organization; however, the official version for our organization in the US is UAYA.

• UAYA is derived from the English version of our organization's name:
  UAYA = Ukrainian American Youth Association.


• CYM is from the Ukrainian version of our organization's name using the Ukrainian (Cyrillic) alphabet: CYM = Спілка Української Молоді!


• SUM or SUMA is from the Ukrainian version of our organization's name using the Roman alphabet:
  
  SUM = Spilka Ukrajins'koji Molodi (without reference to the US, i.e., Ukrainian Youth Association)
  
  SUMA = Spilka Ukrajins'koji Molodi v Amerytsi (with reference to the US. i.e., Ukrainian Youth Association of America, or Ukrainian American Youth Association)
